After positive feedback on my first projection article on Duke's Daniel Jones and FSU's Deondre Francois, I decided to take requests on twitter. First up, Virginia Tech running back Travon McMillian.
Let's first take a look his sophomore stats...
Name | Games | Att | Yds | TD |
Travon McMillian | 14 | 145 | 671 | 7 |
Now let's take a look at some ACC players with comparable numbers during their sophomore season.
Name | Season | Games | Att | Yds | TD |
Shadrach Thornton | 2013 | 10 | 165 | 768 | 4 |
Brandon Radcliff | 2014 | 11 | 144 | 737 | 12 |
Rolandan Finch | 2011 | 11 | 157 | 705 | 3 |
David Sims | 2011 | 12 | 135 | 698 | 7 |
Zach Laskey | 2012 | 14 | 133 | 697 | 1 |
Devonta Freeman | 2012 | 10 | 97 | 630 | 8 |
Now let's take a look at how those same comps performed in their junior seasons.
Name | Season | Games | Att | Yds | TD |
Devonta Freeman | 2013 | 14 | 173 | 1026 | 14 |
Shadrach Thornton | 2014 | 13 | 164 | 907 | 9 |
Brandon Radcliff | 2015 | 12 | 139 | 634 | 7 |
David Sims | 2012 | 12 | 135 | 612 | 4 |
Zach Laskey | 2013 | 13 | 84 | 485 | 7 |
Rolandan Finch | 2012 | 5 | 77 | 431 | 1 |
Now, we'll look at the percentage growth for each of the players from their sophomore to junior seasons.
Name | % Attempts | % Yards | % TD |
Devonta Freeman | 21.5% | 14% | 20% |
Shadrach Thornton | -30.8% | -10.1% | 42.2% |
Brandon Radcliff | -13% | -26.8% | -87% |
David Sims | 0% | -14.1% | -75% |
Zach Laskey | -47% | -33.4% | 86.7% |
Rolandan Finch | 7.3% | 25.6% | -36.4% |
Trends
- Unfortunately, nothing definitive about this sample.
- In a couple cases (Laskey/Thornton), less usage but more production in the endzone.
- In a couple other cases (Sims/Radcliff), we see less usage across the board.
- Finally, we have a couple cases of breakout seasons (Freeman/Finch), although one cut short due to injury for Rolandan Finch (if memory serves).
Projection
Name | Att | Yds | TD |
Travon McMillian | 123.25 | 570.35 | 8.4 |
- This was a tough call, but I modeled McMillian after Laskey and Thornton largely based upon style.
- I predicted at 15% reduction in carries and yards.
- I prediction a 20% increase in TDs.
Thanks to @KyleBaileyWFNZ for the request. If you have a player you would like me to consider, make a request to @scacchoops on twitter. The only request I have is that it be a returning offensive skill player.
