Syracuse was able to get balanced scoring and improved to 4-0 on the season.
The Syracuse Orange (3-0) hosted the South Carolina State Bulldogs (1-2) tonight at the Carrier Dome as part of the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitation. While SCSU took a quick 3-0 lead, the Orange quickly responded with a 15-0 run and never looked back in the game, eventually winning 101-59.
Just three minutes into the game, Jim Boeheim brought Paschal Chukwu and Tyus Battle off the bench to work on the press. The full-court defense sped the game up, but proved relatively ineffective as South Carolina State was able to break the pressure with ease, generating open looks on the other end.
Offensively Syracuse didn’t have trouble putting up points as all nine players in orange scored in the first half. John Gillon led the way with 10 points in the first 20 minutes and helped give Syracuse a 46-31 lead at the break.
Boeheim elected to ditch the press entirely in the second half and reverted to playing 2-3 zone in the half-court. Tyler Lydon was able to find rhythm from outside tonight as he knocked down four threes in only five attempts.
Syracuse had six! players in double-figures. Three Orange players had double-doubles as Lydon and Tyler Roberson had double-digit points and rebounds while Frank Howard had 10 points and 10 assists. 12 Syracuse players scored in the game.
With the win Syracuse moves to 4-0 on the season. The Orange will play South Carolina in Brooklyn on Saturday. That game will tip at 2:30 pm at Barclays.
