Wake Forest to add football series with Appalachian State

The Deacs have agreed to a home and home series vs. Appalachian State football

The busy week of football scheduling continued this morning as Wake Forest announced a home-and-home series with Appalachian State starting in 2017. The Deacs will play in Boone on September 23, 2017 and then host the Mountaineers on September 12, 2020.

The news was first reported by Dan Collins and the Winston-Salem Journal.

The 2017 trip will mark the first visit by Wake Forest to Kidd-Brewer Stadium.

App State recently joined the FBS in the Sun Belt Conference, moving up from the Football Championship Subdivision, where they were extremely successful in the late '00's.

At first glance this seems like an odd home-and-home. I understand the allure and appeal of playing Appalachian State. I think they are a good opponent for the Deacs, but Wake should definitely have tried to get a 2-for-1 out of it.

I haven't seen the contract or anything like that, but if the Deacs got out of paying the Mountaineers money then it changes things a little bit. I also would have liked to get the home game in Winston-Salem first, so if App State were to pull out of the contract after the first game, the Deacs still get a home game out of it.

I am excited to see Wake match up against App State, but am also weary of the deal until I hear a little bit more about it.

In the last match-up Wake Forest beat the Appies 20-10 in 2001. Historically, Wake is 14-7-1 all-time vs. App State.
