NC State's Howell cleaning up glass at record pace

After Richard Howell reached his fourth double-double in the his last five games, I decided to do some research on where Howell stands in NC State history in the rebounding category. Currently, he stands at 773 career rebounds (as of Wednesday), tied for 12th all-time in Wolfpack lore with Julius Hodge.

NC State Career Rebounding Leaders

# Name Rbds
1  Ronnie Shavlik 1,598
2  Tommy Burleson 1,066
3  Mel Thompson 1,063
4  Bobby Speight 1,057
5  John Richter 936
6  Todd Fuller 887
7  Kenny Inge 833
8  Tom Gugliotta 820
9  Kevin Thompson 815
10  Cozell McQueen 800
11  Kenny Carr 789
T12  Julius Hodge 773
T12  Richard Howell 773

Through 10 games this season, Howell is averaging 9.8 rebounds per game. If Howell were to average 9.8 rebounds for the remaining 22 games (including the minimum one game in the ACC Tournament, but not any postseason play), he would finish fifth all-time in Wolfpack history with 989 rebounds.

Ronnie Shavlik is currently first all-time at an unmatchable 1,598 rebounds in just 3 years (before freshmen were allowed to play varsity level). However, second and fourth all-time are separated by a mere nine rebounds. Tommy Burleson has 1,066, Mel Thompson has 1,063, and Bobby Speight comes in at 1,057. All three of those players only had three seasons to accumulate those numbers.

To reach fourth in NC State history, Howell would need to average 11.4 rebounds per game for the next 25 games (if the Wolfpack advance 3 additional rounds combined between the ACC and postseason tournaments. To finish second in Pack history, he would need to raise his average to 11.76 per game to reach 1067 career rebounds.

Another interesting side note is that Howell currently has 913 career points, so he is almost assuredly going to reach 1,000 career points. Along with Shavlik, Burleson, Thompson, and Speight, Howell has a good chance to become one of only five players in NC State history to finish his career with 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. This would cement his place in NC State basketball history.

While Richard Howell has the benefit of an extra year compared to the other members of the 1,000 rebound club, statistical averages in the last 30 years have dropped in general
