Pitt football boasts top 20 offense and defense statistically

It's early, but so far the Panthers' football team ranks near the top of the NCAA in several statistical categories.

Per ESPN, Pitt ranks fifth in the nation in total rushing yards at 356.0 per game. That's buoyed, obviously, by star James Conner who is second in the nation individually behind only UTEP's Aaron Jones.

In overall offense, that dominant running game has helped put points on the board. The Panthers have averaged 46 points per game in their wins against Delaware and Boston College, and that's good for 19th in the country.

Pitt's defense has also played a factor in the team's early success as well. The D has been downright stingy, giving up a total of only 20 points after pitching a shutout against Delaware. And if we're nitpicking here, Boston College scored some late points that might have been a little harder to come by if Pitt didn't hold a 16-point lead late in the fourth quarter. The Eagles' touchdown with under a minute to go hurt the Panthers' statistics a bit.

Still, the ten points per game the defense has averaged ranks 11th in the nation.

We don't need to mention that the competition is going to get more difficult - that's understood. But so far, the Panthers have been one of the more statistically impressive teams in the country through their two games.
