It was already well known that Pitt was interested in Rhode Island head coach Dan Hurley and that the ACC member school had a financial edge over UConn and Rhode Island in the fight to sign the coveted coach. However, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports provided more detail on Tuesday afternoon, revealing that Pitt offered Hurley a contract worth over $3 million per year.
“Pitt has offered Dan Hurley a multi-year deal in excess of $3 million dollars annually to be its next head basketball coach,” Rothstein tweeted, citing multiple sources. He added that UConn and Rhode Island are both “still in play,” despite the staggering offer.

Rothstein went on to note that offers were made by UConn and Rhode Island, but they were worth less monetarily. He also said Hurley is likely to come to a decision in the next 24 hours.
Hurley talked with Pitt about its head coaching vacancy on Monday, but specifics of the discussion were not made public. He also spoke to UConn about its open job, and Jeff Goodman of ESPN reported that he “prefers the UConn job because of the program’s history.”
Of course, Pitt’s offer has to give Hurley — whose only complaint about his situation at Rhode Island was a relative lack of investment — something to think about.
With a reported salary of more than $3 million per year, he would be one of the highest paid coaches in the country and the second highest paid coach in the ACC, trailing only Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, according to USA Today.
