Remember this article from CBS Sports a few years ago? – Critical Coaches : Most overrated coaches in the country. Guess who topped the list – North Carolina coach Roy Williams. Well after Monday night, Roy Williams is a 3 Time National Champion.
Only John Wooden (10), Mike Krzyzewski (5), and Adolph Rupp (4) have won more. As we told you a few days ago when we said on the blog Don’t Doubt Roy Williams, he’s been to 9 Final Fours in his career, and won over 800 games.
Not long ago, the Tar Heels had a three year run averaging 11 losses from 2013-2015. There was even a 6 year dry spell of missing Final Fours from 2010-2015. That’s an eternity for a basketball power like North Carolina. Some felt Roy’s best days were behind him. Recruiting and coaching with the backdrop of a NCAA investigation made things even more difficult for Roy Williams.
Take a trip down memory. Just 2 years ago the #FireRoyWilliams hash tag was a thing, as @Hokiesmash_ASD wrote.
Now he’s proved with back to back Final Fours and a national title, that he is indeed one of the best coaches of this generation. 3 National Titles don’t happen by accident. You have to be a great coach for that to happen. That’s exactly what Roy Williams is.
