Game Recap

Browsing through the recaps, here's what happened Monday night...

Duke Basketball Report on Duke's 74-49 win:

The story of the game, in many respects, was the sterling play of Jon Scheyer, who has now played 74 minutes without a turnover.

He really orchestrated the win.  Aside from flawless ballhandling, he also recorded five assists and kept the offense from getting stagnant.

Kyle Singler benefited a lot from Scheyer’s play and ended up with a double-double, scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 boards.  He also got two blocks.

Andre Dawkins came off the bench for 25 minutes and while he didn’t shoot well (5-14/3-11), that will come.  The encouraging part was his willingness to shoot.  He can be a really useful weapon.  The other encouraging part was his willingness to move in and rebound and play around the basket.  He only got two boards but he was fighting for them.

Charlottesville Daily Progress on Virginia's 66-49 loss:

Tony Bennett pursed his lips, leaned back in his court-side seat and let out a big sigh. There were still over three minutes to play in the game.  There he was, in a half-empty arena with ugly green and yellow seats. His best player had been outplayed by a guy many college fans don’t know. His second-best had fouled out way before then, with some nine minutes to play.  No, this wasn’t how the first-year coach envisioned his first road game going.  South Florida, behind 22 points and seven rebounds from junior guard Dominique Jones, and 18 points and eight rebounds from Augustus Gilchrist, avenged their loss to Virginia last season in Charlottesville with a 66-49 victory in front of a crowd of 4,193 at The Sun Dome.  “I think our defense held us in there,” Bennett said, “but then as the game wore on, I thought their defense toughened up and we kind of did a role reversal, and ours softened a little bit.”  The defeat was Virginia’s 11th consecutive in the state of Florida.

Miami Herald on Miami's blowout win:

The older Durand Scott grew on the courts of New York City, the more he heard he needed to be a point guard.

On Monday night, the touted freshman out of Rice High in Manhattan made his first college start for the University of Miami and looked the part.

After earning Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week honors for his zero-turnover, 10-assist debut Saturday, Scott had 14 points and eight assists as UM cruised to a 108-58 blowout of Division II Nova Southeastern at BankUnited Center.

Gaston Gazette on FSU's win over Jacksonville:

Anyone who has seen Gastonia’s Leonard Hamilton coach basketball knows he has an understated style and grace about his sideline demeanor that belies the competitive fires that burn within.

That started for a 38th season Monday when Hamilton’s Florida State Seminoles  open the regular-season at home with a 81-67 win over Jacksonville. Solomon Alabi’s 17 points led a balanced offense.

Many in the college basketball world will wonder what Hamilton can do for an encore?
