A program vet and a grad transfer will lead the Cards in Chris Mack’s first season.
By a vote of their teammates, junior forward V.J. King and graduate transfer point guard Christen Cunningham have been named Louisville’s captains for the 2018-19 season.
“Both Christen and V.J. earned the right of being named captains,” said U of L head coach Chris Mack in a release. “They put in an awful lot of work this off season and hold the respect of all their teammates, so it wasn’t all that surprising they were named. It’s quite an honor for the two of them leading the Louisville Cardinals this season.”
A former five-star McDonald’s All-American, King averaged 8.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game for Louisville last season. Cunningham transferred to U of L after setting Samford’s school record for career assists with 514. He’s also the school’s 13th all-time leading scorer after netting 1,283 in just three full seasons.
The last time Louisville had a captaincy mix of a veteran and a newcomer (or two), the season turned out pretty well ... at least until the school took the postseason away. Here’s hoping for another overachieving regular season, but a more pleasant finish in 2018-19.
