Game Recap

There’s no value in Greensboro. None.

The Syracuse Orange got off to a fast start on Wednesday night against UNC-Greensboro.

Freshman Tyus Battle hit a 3-pointer to give the Orange an early 3-2 lead. Fellow freshman Taurean Thompson came out on fire, scoring eight first-half points and grabbing four rebounds.

But the story of the first half was fifth-year transfer Andrew White, who scored 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. The Orange shot 64 percent from the field, and 60 percent from deep.

All seven Syracuse plays who saw action in the first half scored.

John Gillon, White, Tyler Lydon and Tyler Roberson each had three assists for Syracuse, who led 47-37 at halftime.

Demetrius Troy led the Spartans with 14 first-half points on 4-of-4 from behind the arc. Francis Alonso, who came into Wednesday’s game shooting 47 percent from 3, was held to 1-of-5 from deep in the first 20 minutes.

Syracuse carried the momentum over to the second half, as the Orange got out to a 60-43 lead at the 16:19 mark.

Tyus Battle had seven quick points to open the second half, while Andrew White connected on his fifth 3-pointer of the game, which tied Gerry McNamara’s record for 3’s in a season with 107.

And when No. 108 and 109 came, White notched another 30-point game.

Between he and Tyus Battle — the Orange offense seemed unstoppable.

SU had four players in double-figures, and shot over 42 percent from deep.

But a late run from the Spartans made things interesting. With 1:54 to go, the Orange only led by seven. Tyler Lydon then hit two free throws and SU never looked back.

White led all scorers with 34 points. Tyus Battle finished with 20, while Tyler Lydon had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Thompson finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Baldwin had a team-high 18 points for the Spartans, who finish the season 25-10.

The Orange advance to play Ole Miss in the second round of the NIT. Tip-off is this Saturday at 11 a.m. ET.
