The Deacs win its third game in a row over a hapless Richmond team.
It may have been a lazy Saturday afternoon crowd on hand to watch the Wake Forest-Richmond basketball game, but the Deacs came out with its best performance of the young season in a dominant 82-53 victory.
With the win the Deacs move to 4-4 on the season and will take on Charlotte on Tuesday night in the first road game of the season. Richmond falls to 1-7 and will head to Old Dominion on Wednesday night to take on the Monarchs.
The Deacs shot 42% from the three-point line and 57% from twos en route to a 54% shooting night. Richmond finished at just 35% overall and shot a woeful 6-26 (23%) from behind the line. Wake also outrebounded Richmond 39-28 on the game.
Doral Moore set the pace early, racking up 13 points and 6 rebounds at the half before yielding to some younger players for developmental minutes over the rest of the game. Moore finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks.
Donovan Mitchell and Melo Eggleston both had glimpses of very good basketball, as Mitchell showed off his ability to hit the three, while Eggleston demonstrated his high-flying athleticism.
Mitchell finished with 9 points and 4 rebounds on 4 shots (2-2 from behind the arc), while Eggleston finished with 6 points and two massive dunks.
Quite frankly everybody played a heck of a game as the Deacs took control from the beginning of the game and never looked back. Using a combination of man-to-man and 2-3 matchup zone defense, Wake Forest was able to stifle the Spiders offense throughout the game.
The Deacs led 40-29 at the half and came out of the second half on fire, holding the Spiders scoreless for the first 6 minutes and 30 seconds of the half. Overall Wake outscored Richmond 42-23 in the second half.
Point guard Bryant Crawford had as quiet of a 15 point, 7 rebound, 4 assist, and 2 steal game that you can possibly have in college, while both Keyshawn Woods (17 points), and Mitchell Wilbekin (12 points) also got into double digits.
Freshman Grant Golden was a bright spot for Richmond and is certainly going to be one of those guys that will seemingly be in college for 50+ years, putting up 10 points and 5 rebounds at the half en route to a 16 point, 7 rebound, and 4 assist performance. His 6 turnovers are something that he will have to work on though.
There was simply no answer to Doral Moore for Richmond, as he shot 6-6 in the first half with 4 dunks and overpowered the Spiders from the start of the game. If Wake really wanted to then it probably could have gone to him every single play of the game, but it branched out and got other guys involved in what was overall a fantastic team effort.
The Deacs were up 76-45 when it began subbing in walk-ons.
Brandon Childress missed the game as he was in concussion protocol following his “collision” with Leron Black of Illinois at the end of Tuesday’s victory over the Illini.
Prompting us to wonder what exactly has been done to examine the blatant cheap shot that Black put on Chill at the end of the game.
We will have much more on this game at the early part of next week, but the Deacs are back to .500 and finally playing some reasonably good basketball.
