The marquee matchup on Sunday among ACC schools had NC State playing Oklahoma State in the Puerto Rico Tipoff final. Of course, someone forgot to tell NC State it was a marquee game because the Pack's effort was pathetic. The Wolfpack trailed by double-figures most of the game and ultimately ended up losing 76-56. Oklahoma State is a talented team. LeBryan Nash and Marcus Smart are legit players, so don't take this article as me selling the Cowboys short at all, but NC State's performance was brutal.
I made the point on Twitter last as I questioned whether a Mike Krzyzewski led team would show such poor effort. The point was to question Gottfried's ability to motivate this team. As @austin_johnson pointed out its entirely possible Gottfried was ready for NC State to fail. Just as a parent watches a child try to do things their own way knowing failure is likely, Gottfried watched his team try it their way. Perhaps its what this team needed, and hopefully they will learn from it.
In other ACC action, Boston College lost to College of Charleston 71-67 without Ryan Anderson playing due to an ankle injury. Of course before you make excuses, College of Charleston's best player also missed the game. Duke used a 30-0 run against Florida Gulf Coast to open up a lead after trailing for a good part of the first half. The Blue Devils cruised the rest of the way to a 88-67 victory.
Tonight, UNC takes on Mississippi State in the opening round of the Maui Classic. I'll let you read my preview for my thoughts on that one. Also, Wake Forest takes on Mercer, Virginia Tech plays UNCG, and Virginia hosts Lamar.
