GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Pitt sophomore Jamel Artis has been chosen as the Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Player of the Week by a select media panel, while Duke freshman Justise Winslow earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors.
The weekly honors are the first of the season for both players.
Artis delivered a pair of outstanding performances in a 2-0 week for Pitt. The Baltimore native averaged 26.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals in leading the Panthers to victories over Bryant (72-67) and Syracuse (83-77). Artis shot .58 percent from the field (18- of- 31), including 44 percent from 3-point range. Against a persistent Bryant team, Artis scored a career-high 32 points, the second highest point total by a Pitt player in Petersen Events Center history. He added six rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block against the Bulldogs. Artis achieved the first double-double of his career (20 points and 10 boards) in an emotional 83-77 win over Syracuse. He added five assists – including a beautiful no-look pass leading to a key basket down the stretch – and three steals. It marked the seventh consecutive game in which Artis led the team in scoring. He has averaged 21.1 points over that seven-game stretch.
Winslow averaged 17.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 steals per game as Duke recorded a pair of home victories. The Houston native was 11-of-17 (.647) from the field, including 2-of-3 (.667) from three-point range, and 10-of-15 (.667) from the free throw line for the week. Winslow opened the week with 15 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals against Georgia Tech. He was 5-of-6 from the field and 4-of-7 from the free throw line in the contest. Winslow capped the week with 17 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocks as Duke posted a 90-60 win over No. 10 Notre Dame. He was 6-of-11 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line while collecting his third straight double-double.
