A Pocket Guide To The Varsity Football Team Of LSU

This is one of the saddest times of the year for football fans - we are in between seasons. But thankfully next season is just around the corner.

Soon we will be able to watch college and NFL games every week. You can find the best NCAAF odds on both here.

Most of the NFL players that we love, started playing college football. So, if you're not someone who watches the NCAAF, why not try it this year. We promise there are tons of good football out there to enjoy.

With the return of college football and the NCAAF, we want to take a look at one of the most exciting teams in the league right now.

We will be looking at the LSU Tigers football team. We will be looking at their history and what could be in their future.

Louisiana State University

LSU (Louisiana State University) is an American university that was founded in 1853. The university has 21 varsity teams all named the Tigers.

Their most popular teams are the football team, the women's basketball team, and the male basketball team. The mascot for the varsity teams is Mike the Tiger.

LSU is a celebrated research university that has a Top 20 veterinary school. It is the most comprehensive school in its state and has over 25,000 undergraduates, with thousands more post-graduates enrolled.

LSU has many famous alumni including Olympian Lolo Jones and writers Stephen Ambrose and Amy Brittain.

Team History

The LSU football team is the fourth most successful team at LSU - both ladies' track and field teams, as well as the men's basketball team. The football team has won five national championships.

The LSU football team was founded in 1983. It was started by a chemistry teacher who had previously played for the team at John Hopkins University. They lost their first game to Tulane 0-34.

The Tigers would go on to win the National Championship 5 times - 1908, 1958, 2003, 2007, and 2019. They have the 11th best winning record in the NCAAF right now.

Coach

The current coach of the LSU Tigers is Bill Kelly. He took over at the end of the 2021-22 season, and his first game for the team will be in September 2022.

He has taken over from Ed Orgeron who had to retire after allegations that he covered up sexual assaults committed by one of his running backs to keep him on the team.

Kelly is the former head coach of Notre Dame, where he spent 11 years. During this time they won a National Championship and made it to the playoffs multiple times.

Football Alumni

LSU has a great reputation in the NFL. A few years ago they had over 40 active alumni playing for the NFL. At the time that was the second highest in the NCAAF.

One of the most exciting alumni of the school right now is Joe Burrows. Burrows was the quarterback that led LSU to their National Championship win in 2019. He was also a Heisman Trophy winner.

Burrows led the Bengals to the Super Bowl this year, it was the team's first Super Bowl game in nearly 40 years.

The Bengals have since brought on multiple LSU graduates including Ja'Marr Chase.

This Season

A lot of the 2021-2022 season was overshadowed by the sexual assault accusations and the departure of Ed Orgeron. They had withdrawn from quite a few competitions in 2020 because of the ongoing investigation.

They ended on a win-loss ratio of 6–7 - with a 3-5 record in the SEC. This performance wasn't enough to get them any higher than 6th place in the Western Division of SEC.

The team ended their season by playing Kansas State in the Texas Bowl - they lost 20-42. This was the second time they had made it to the Texas Bowl.

National Finals

The Tigers do not play in the NCAAF finals, instead, they play in the College Football Playoffs.

Due to their last place performance in their division, the Tigers did not qualify for the National Finals this season. The last time they won the national title was in 2019 when they were led by quarterback Joe Burrows.

In the 2019 season, they went undefeated and ended on 15-0. They finished the season by beating  Clemson, 42–25 to claim the national title.

Next Season - What Can We Expect From The Tigers In 2022?

There are a lot of changes going on at the LSU Tigers right now.

They have just brought on a new coach and we may see even more changes within the coaching staff as he settles in.

That makes it hard to predict how the Tigers may perform next year. That being said, LSU is a school with a rich footballing history and an excellent recruitment system - so there is no doubt that they will have some excellent players joining them in the fall.

We are excited to see how Bill Kelly applies his coaching style to the team. We could have the next CFP champions on our hands, only time will tell.
