Mike Hopkins signs with an agent and the chances he leaves to become head coach elsewhere just went up exponentially.
See, even when its a coach, hearing that a Syracuse Orange has signed with agent doesn't sound good.
Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Mike Hopkins has signed with IMG, according to a report in the Sports Business Journal.
Sandy Montag, IMG's senior corporate vice president and head of clients, is expected to represent Hopkins for the agency. Hopkins was previously unrepresented.
"His next contract will be a head coaching contract," Montag told the Sports Business Journal. "I have known Mike a while, and the time is right for him to get some representation."
Well then...
Montag also reps Scott Shafer, Bob Costas, Tom Coughlin and Jay Bilas and is a Syracuse alum himself. He's doing very well.
So what does this tell us? Well, Montag pretty much lays it out. After getting shafted in the USC coaching search, Hokins is apparently serious about becoming a head coach and waiting around for Boeheim to retire just isn't gonna cut it anymore.
Sucks for dreams of SU coaching continuity, but a smart move by Hopkins. It really is time for him to become a HC and his stock has probably never been higher. Don't be shocked if the next time his name comes up at another school, he ends up there.
If there is good news buried in here, it's the indirect line you can draw from this to Boeheim's tenure, which apparently isn't ending as soon as you thought it was.
