They were treated for knife wounds for non life-threatening injuries
According to the Winston-Salem Journal, and WXII, three Wake Forest student-athletes were injured in a knife attack at an off-campus part over the weekend.
Fortunately it appears that they were all treated at a local hospital and released with minor injuries:
Officers determined that a group of students were gathered for a private party when an argument escalated to a fight. More people got involved and three students were cut with a knife, police said.
Police identified the injured students as Tyra Whitehead, 19; Sam Japhet-Mahias, 19; and Tyler Marquis Williams, 17. Their injuries were not life-threatening and they were treated at local hospitals, police said.
Details are unknown at this time as to what spurred the argument, but all three players injured are student-athletes.
Sam Japhet-Mathias is a rising sophomore on the men’s basketball team. Tyra Whitehead is a rising sophomore on the women’s basketball team, and Tyler Marquis Williams is a freshman on the football team.
"The athletic department is aware of the investigation being conducted by the Winston-Salem Police Department into an off-campus incident early Sunday morning, July 23rd. Athletics is looking into the incident as well and the department is fully cooperating with WSPD in the investigation," a statement from Associate Athletic Director Steve Shutt said.
Shutt confirmed that the three victims are still enrolled as students at WFU.
We will provide more information when we receive it and as it comes out, but thank goodness the injuries were minor and the three are doing alright now.
