Increasingly, when you talk about Jon Scheyer, you have to start considering where he might rank among Duke’s greats.
When you see a performance like he put on against Iowa State, it’s difficult not to slip into that mode. It’s very hard to reach the status of Grant Hill, Christian Laettner, Shane Battier, Bobby Hurley, J. J. Redick, Johnny Dawkins, Jim Spanarkel, Jack Marin, Jeff Mullins, Art Heyman, and Dick Groat.
But when you consider the overall intelligence of his game, his ability to score, pass with minimal turnovers, to defend, and to fill the needs his team has, well, he’s almost at that level.
People tend to underrate him perhaps because he’s so slight and doesn’t look like a dominant ballplayer. Clearly, however, he is.
In Duke’s solid win over Iowa State, Scheyer was 10-19 from the floor, 4-9 from three point range, and 7-7 from the line for 31 points. He also had four assists and two steals. He didn’t sell hotdogs at halftime, but he might as well have. He did just about everything else.
