There’s a surprise new face on the roster for fall ball.
While this may not be news to everybody, Dan Collins reported yesterday that Wake Forest has two grad transfers coming in to play for this year’s squad. Everybody knew about the 5-10 cornerback Cedric Jiles from Mississippi State, but apparently the Deacs also added a 6-1, 315 pound defensive tackle named Deon Young out of Northern Arizona.
I don’t have a lot of details on the signing of Young, but he played three seasons at NAU before making his way across the country to play at Wake Forest.
I am guessing that he is more for depth in the middle than anything else, especially with the return of Zeek Rodney. I will be interesting to see where he slots in among Sulaiman Kamara and Elontae Bateman as backups to Rodney and Willie Yarbary, but depth in the trenches is always welcome.
A glance at his film over the past few years shows that he is clearly strong and can handle the competition of the Big Sky Conference, but it’s a big step up to the ACC.
Anyway, this is a welcome addition to a scholarship slot that otherwise would have gone unfilled. Welcome Wake Deon, we can’t wait to see what you can bring on the gridiron!
