With March Madness just around the corner, we thought now would be a good time to address some of the Atlantic Coast Conference teams' chances of going all the way this year. The Conference is stacked with talent and no less than seven teams have positive win records so far this season.
Therefore, it's no wonder many sportsbooks have them listed as some of the favorites to win the championship outright. For more information on that see the best odds here.
But can they go all the way to the finals this year just as Virginia did back in 2019? Let's take a look at some of the teams with the most prominent chances of glory and there is only one place to start.
Duke
Duke are not only the favorites to win the Atlantic Coast Conference but they're also the favorites to win the entire NCAA basketball championships this season. And with a 23-3 record this season it's easy to see why they're the favourites.
They reached the final eight last season before getting annihilated in a shock defeat to NC State. However, they have already avenged that loss this year and they look a much stronger proposition this season. Duke last won the NCAA championship exactly ten years ago so winning this year almost feels like it could be fate.
Clemson
Clemson sits in second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference and are the only other team with a win percentage over .800. They are one of only three teams to have beaten the favorites Duke this season which shows they know how to get things done in the big games. And they have a history of doing so. You only have to go back to last year's March Madness to see this. On their way to the final eight they took out Arizona and Baylor who were second and third seeds.
Clemson has never reached the final and the bookmakers don't give them much hope of doing so either this year. However, since coach Brownell altered the starting line up recently, Clemson looks like a new proposition and they could cause a few more surprises this year.
Louisville
The Cardinals have picked up 20 wins so far this season and their offense which features the impressive Terrence Edwards Jr looks a force to be reckoned with. They're one of the most in-form teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference at present and they appear to be building a head of steam as we approach the tail end of the season.
However, despite this, bookmakers have them listed no better than lively outsiders. They didn't reach the end of season tournament last year and it's been 12 years since they last won it.
However, they are one of a very select few that have gone on to win the championships on three occasions. There was a 27 year gap between wins two and three and they will be hoping that the wait will be much shorter this time around.
Wake Forest
While Wake Forest still has work to do to even reach the tournament this season, they have looked good at times this season. Their biggest flaw is when they've faced stiffer competition at present they haven't found the answers and have come up short. They have lost to all three of the teams highlighted on this list this season but despite that, they are still in with a shot.
They failed to reach last year's end of season showcase and they have never been to the championship game in their history. However, history is there to be broken and the Deacon Demons have a real outside chance to do just that.
Can the Atlantic Coast to Victory?
So there you have it, the four best chances for the Atlantic Coast to get their name etched on the trophy this year. And of course, it's not just each other they will have to contend with. With the likes of Auburn and Alabama hitting their strides, it won't be easy going all the way this year.
The 68 team field will be announced on March 16th with the first games being played two days later. Can the teams from the Atlantic Coast to Victory? Only time will tell but looking at the four teams above and what they all have to offer, you have to say they have a real shot.
