The Tar Heel point guard has decided to withdraw from the NBA Draft process.
Joel Berry II will return to North Carolina for his senior season, UNC has announced. The Tar Heel point guard declared for the NBA Draft at the early entry deadline, but has withdrawn from the process in order to return to Carolina next year.
In a statement from UNC, Berry says that he and his family discussed the matter and decided that he would be best suited returning to college for his senior year. Berry was named the Most Outstanding Player at the Final Four on his way to helping the Tar Heels to their sixth tournament championship.
It’s an exciting day for those invested in Carolina basketball, as the team next year is unquestionably better with Berry on it. Berry also benefits from trying to enter the NBA in what could be a more favorable situation for him after playing another year in college.
Now Carolina awaits the decision of Tony Bradley and Theo Pinson, as well as Kevin Knox. Next year’s team could very well find their way back to a third consecutive Final Four if everything breaks the right way, and Berry deciding to return is the first step in that.
