Coby White continues to rack up accolades going into his final high school season.

2018 verbal commit Coby White spent the better part of the 2016-17 high school and AAU seasons further making a case as to why he was ranked among high school’s top 25 players. It appears that his hard work is being noticed, as Phenom Hoop Report now has him listed as the No. 1 high school player in the state of North Carolina for the upcoming 2017-18 calendar year.

“Coby might be one of the most prolific scorers in North Carolina history,” said Rick Lewis, owner of Phenom Hoop Report. “He’s just wired to score. He's phenomenal. Being 6-5 with his length, athleticism and skill set, he's pretty dog-gone good. He's special.”

The Goldsboro native point guard has had a monster year for Greenfield school, averaging 31.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game. He was named the NC Gatorade Player of the Year, and was also a NCISSA 1A All-State pick. White managed to help lead his team to a 23-11 record, which was good enough to take the team to the NCISSA 1A semi-finals.

In the AAU circuit this spring, White continued to show strong consistent play for Team CP3. He averaged 21.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game for the spring circuit. In the most recent game against E1T1 United, White went 8-13 for 21 points, grabbed 3 rebounds and had one assist in their 68-70 defeat.

During the AAU season, White continued to produce highlight after highlight. Maybe the biggest highlight of the season is when he drove down the lane and posterized a defender with a huge dunk at the 32 second mark of this video:

Taking a look at the regional player rankings (NC, SC, and VA), White is currently the No. 2 player according to Phenom Hoop Report directly behind 5-star prospect Zion Williamson. Another fellow UNC recruit that made the list is Jairus Hamilton, a 6’8 small forward from Concord, NC. Hamilton is listed as No. 6 in the state and No. 8 regionally.

There is currently a lot of talk that Coby White will continue to climb the national rankings as well. 247 Sports and ESPN both currently list White as a 4-star recruit. While 247 Sports has him listed as No. 47 in their rankings, ESPN has him listed as No. 32 in the nation and the 6th best point guard in the country coming out of the 2018 class. The scout grade received by ESPN was an 88, just two points off from the lowest-graded 5-star recruit in their rankings.

With White’s present trajectory, it is hard to imagine a scenario where he finishes up his high school career not at least knocking at the back door of being a 5-star recruit and a top 25 prospect. His game has been extremely consistent both in regular high school play and in AAU play, and he is turning more and more heads as time goes by. His aggressiveness, his court-vision, and the fire that he plays with will make for a solid replacement when Joel Berry graduates next year. I can imagine we will only hear more from White as we get closer to the post-season All-Star games next spring.
