43 - 42 On Saturday, Pitt shocked the world by pulling off one of the bigger upsets of the season, defeating No. 2 Clemson on the road, 43-42.
Kicker Chris Blewitt is the one getting all of the credit in the immediate aftermath - and deservedly so. His 48-yard field goal to seal the win with only a few seconds left is what put the Panthers over the top. But in reality, the team had so many other heroes today.
Start with quarterback Nathan Peterman. Peterman had the first 300-yard game of his career, finishing the day with 308 of those to go along with five touchdown passes and no interceptions. He also came through on that final drive, getting Pitt into position to set up his kicker.
He had help in the backfield from running back James Conner. Pitt's cancer-defeating running back had 189 rushing and receiving yards (132 on the ground) with a pair of touchdowns.
Receiving, there was no bigger player than tight end Scott Orndoff. The senior hauled in nine passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns of his own. Heck, don't forget about fullback George Aston, who was instrumental on Pitt's shovel passes and had four receptions for 29 yards and two touchdowns of his own.
Finally, while the pass defense struggled badly, allowing Deshaun Watson to throw for an ACC-record 580 yards, the Panthers also harassed him into three interceptions. Watson was picked off by Saleem Brightwell, Ryan Lewis, and Avonte Maddox. Brightwell's pick was absolutely crucial as Clemson was ahead by eight points late in the game when he made the interception and returned it to the Clemson side of the field to set up Pitt's final touchdown before the field goal.
Blewitt should get the credit here but man, the Panthers had so many guys show up today.
