1) Ahmmon Richards, Miami
When you break any records Michael Irvin holds at Miami, you’ve done something. Ahmmon Richards broke Michael Irvin’s freshman record for receiving yards with 934. In fact that led the nation for freshman in that category.
He averaged over 19 yards a reception in a freshman All-American season. How good can Richards get in year 2? He may be just getting started on what could be a great career.
2) Cam Phillips, Virginia Tech
There have been some really good receivers come through Virginia Tech. Cam Phillips could leave Virginia Tech as the top statistical receiver in Virginia Tech history. He needs 46 more catches and 905 more yards. Those are numbers Phillips is capable of reaching.
Last year Phillips had 76 receptions for 983 yards. With premier pass catchers Isaiah Ford and Bucky Hodges gone, I expect an even bigger year from Phillips.
3) Jester Weah, Pittsburgh
Quick – who led the ACC lead the ACC in yards per reception last season? His mark was also second in the nation. The answer was Jester Weah of Pittsburgh who averaged 24.2 yards a reception for 870 yards, on just 36 catches. He also had 10 TDs.
At 6’3″ 210 lbs and a sprint champion in high school, Weah has NFL potential with a good season in 2017.
4) Deon Cain, Clemson
Deon Cain has big shoes to fill at Clemson following the departure of top 10 pick WR Mike Williams. In his first two years, he’s show flashes of being a go-to receiver, but he has lacked consistency. Last year he had 38 catches for 724 yards with 9 TDs.
He has good speed, with the ability to stretch defenses. As one of Clemson’s leading returning offensive players, this could be a break through season for Cain.
5) Jaylen Samuels, NC State
Jaylen Samuels is arguably the most versatile player in the ACC. He can play running back, wide receiver, and tight end. I simply had to find a spot for Samuels in of these top 5 player ranking lists.
Wide Receiver seemed to be as good as spot to place Samuels. Last season he 55 receptions and 7 touchdown receptions. He is the Wolfpack’s top offensive weapon, and the focus of any defensive coordinator’s gameplan that faces NC State.
