I guess we’re not as crowded at safety as we thought.
We’ve mentioned numerous times this offseason that the Syracuse Orange have quite a few defensive backs on the roster. Make it one less for this season now, according to a report from Syracuse.com.
On Tuesday, Stephen Bailey reported that redshirt freshman Devon Clarke would not be eligible for the 2017 season — a fact SU told Syracuse.com. No further details were provided due to privacy laws.
Clarke, along with former Orange defensive end Jaquwan Nelson, was charged with burglary this offseason. Clarke was reinstated before fall camp, but Nelson was not.
When the team’s week one depth chart came out on Monday, Clarke was not included in the two-deep at either safety spot. Antwan Cordy will start at free safety, with Jordan Martin backing him up. Evan Foster will start at strong safety, relieved by Rodney Williams.
Clarke is the second Orange football player this week to no longer be on the team for this season. He joins center Donnie Foster, who was injured during spring practice after starting two games in 2016. SU announced Foster was no longer with the program on Monday.
