UNC actually got 12 first place votes to Kentucky's 11 but each ended up with 749 total points. Maryland received five first place votes and is #3, Duke is #4 with three first place votes and Kansas rounds out the top five with a lone vote for first.
This is the first time since 2011-12 UNC will begin the season atop one of the major polls.
Based on this poll UNC will have games this season versus:
#3 Maryland
#4 Duke(twice)
#6 Virginia
#18 Notre Dame
Obviously this will change as the poll fluctuates over the course of the season. Two of UNC's marquee name opponents, UCLA and Texas are unranked in the season's first poll though both are in the "others receiving votes" section.
