Questions continue to swirl around the Miami program on who will take over at quarterback for Brad Kaaya. There certainly is talent in the program but head coach Mark Richt is letting the battle play out for now but would like to find an answer soon.
At ACC Media Day, Richt mentioned that he is letting it continue through camp but he is hoping to have his answer by the second week, possibly even earlier if possible.
Right now, many may have redshirt junior Malik Rosier starting the season off with the small experience he has. So far in his career, he has played in 10 games, started one and has thrown for 338 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.
However, questions have surrounded Rosier with his consistency in throwing the ball and at times decision making. He has completed 50 percent of his passes through his career and has three interceptions. That will be key for Richt in when evaluating the junior quarterback.
But one can’t take away that he was the backup for Kaaya the last two years.
However, with Rosier’s experience comes N’Kosi Perry’s talent. Perry, a 6-foot-4, 185 pound freshman from Florida should have Cane's fans happy and excited about the future; but the future could be now.
Some outlets say that if Perry had enrolled early and had more time to learn the offense and playbook, the question surrounding on who would start might not be as blurry. However, the talented freshman has had to come in and get right to work. But that doesn’t out do his ability. He is a very dangerous dual-threat quarterback, one of the top coming out of the high school ranks. Bringing that run-pass threat at the position could be extremely helpful this season and just bring another dynamic to this offense.
Redshirt-sophomore Evan Shirreffs is also in the mix but he doesn’t possess the dual-threat dynamic ability of Perry and he doesn’t have any playing experience like Rosier brings.
As mentioned, Rosier would look like the one that would start Game 1 of the season for the Canes but if the junior can’t produce and protect the ball, he will certainly have the likes of Perry and Shirreff looking over his shoulders.
