We're just a few days into the college basketball season, but make no mistake, Tuesday felt like March. Whether it was watching the talented youngsters in Duke/Kansas, Kentucky trying to battle back after digging an early hole against Michigan State, or watch VCU hit a 24 footer to take our Virginia at home. Thankfully it wasn't March, as three out of the seven ACC teams that played on Tuesday would be headed home.
Duke lost to Kansas 94-83, but the final score doesn't tell you much. The Blue Devils played well for the first 35 minutes of the game, but foul trouble and an inability to guard Kansas without fouling were too much late. Jabari Parker was as good as you could ask for, considering it was his second game, in his hometown, and against Andrew Wiggins. Parker finished with 27 points in the loss. I raised concerns about Duke's defense after the Davidson win, and they certain proved true against Kansas.
The only other game I was able to watch last night was Virginia/VCU. The Cavaliers seemed to have control of the game late, but VCU managed to steal it way when Treveon Graham hit a contested long three point shot to bury the Cavaliers. Virginia's problem was that they didn't execute late, a surprise considering the Cavalier experience.
NC State led Cincinnati at half, but fell apart in the second half. Syracuse and Pitt won easily, while Virginia Tech picked up a nice win over West Virginia. Wake Forest also won and was led by Devin Thomas who finished with 20 points and 17 rebounds in just 25 minutes on the floor.
Check out the game previews below for the three ACC teams in action tonight.
