Can’t mess up this opportunity for a first ACC win...right?
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports
Folks, we are smack dab in the middle of January and your Notre Dame Fighting Irish are STILL looking for their first ACC win of the basketball season. It’s been tough sledding so far for this young and inconsistent squad, with a number of ranked matchups to start the ACC slate along with a road trip to the always-tough North Carolina Tar Heels.
The Irish have talent on the roster, with the likes of Nate Laszewski and Juwan Durham showing flashes of brilliance, and have been competitive even in most of their losses, but have yet to find the consistency or rhythm necessary to win against in-conference competition. The backcourt in particular has failed to get in sync with its big-guy counterparts, with Prentiss Hubb and Dane Goodwin in particular struggling mightily to generate consistent offensive output. With marks of 3-8 overall and 0-5 in ACC play, this team needs to gel quickly if it hopes to win anything of significance this season.
Fortunately, this weekend another struggling team in the Boston College Eagles, (3-9 overall, 1-5 in ACC play) to South Bend. Although the Eagles are fresh off a resounding win against the Miami Hurricanes, look for the Irish to garner their first ACC win as they finally get a matchup with one of the conference’s weaker teams. The Irish guards will likely have opportunities to get points on the board in the fast-break game against turnover-prone BC, while the bigs should continue to produce. If there is to be an Irish resurgence this season, it will likely begin with this game.
