In its final tune-up before leaving for the Bahamas to participate in the Battle 4 Atlantis, Louisville had no trouble rolling past visiting Long Beach State 88-56 Thursday afternoon at the KFC Yum Center.
Jaylen Johnson continued the impressive start to his junior season, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds despite playing just 18 minutes. Deng Adel (11), Mangok Mathiang (11) and Ray Spalding (10) also scored in double figures.
After a back-and-forth opening to the first half, Louisville exploded for a 16-0 run that gave them a 30-8 advantage. Long Beach State fought back to make the halftime score a respectable 42-27, but the 49ers were never within striking distance from that point forward.
While 11 different Cardinals scored in the game, Louisville dominated Long Beach State with defense for the bulk of the contest. U of L forced 19 turnovers out of their opponents, and limited the 49ers to just 29.5 percent (18-of-61) shooting from the field.
The Cards will begin their run in the Battle 4 Atlantis when they open up against Old Dominion next Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. The game will be carried on AXS Tv.
