Pitt's Marcus Carr is keeping his options open

Carr has seen a lot of interest since being granted his release

A number of top programs have shown interest in Pitt guard Marcus Carr since he was granted his release from the team on March 19, and the arrival of newly hired head coach Jeff Capel on Wednesday apparently did not cause him to reconsider his potential departure.

Vidal Massiah, Carr’s AAU coach, revealed on Wednesday night that the guard has spoken to Capel but is “keeping all options open,” according to Adam Zagoria of The New York Times.

Since being granted his release, Carr has drawn interest from Akron, Cincinnati, Gonzaga, Iowa State, Marquette, Minnesota, Ohio State, Texas, UMass and Xavier. Although Akron and UMass would likely represent a step down from Pitt, the list also includes five tournament teams, and the opportunity to play for a higher-achieving program could prove to be enticing to Carr.

Carr was considered a four-star recruit by Rivals coming into the 2017-18 season, but 247Sports and ESPN both gave him a three-star rating. In November 2017, he was singled out by ESPN analyst Jay Bilas as one of the 32 best freshmen in college basketball alongside Duke’s Marvin Bagley III, Arizona’s Deandre Ayton and Missouri’s Michael Porter Jr.

The Toronto native didn’t appear to be quite on that level, but he did put up a respectable 10 points and four assists per game in his freshman season, leading Pitt in the latter category. If he chooses to rejoin the Panthers, he’ll be one of Capel’s more polished returning players.
