SB Nation Season Preview: NC State can be a 2015 ACC dark horse, but has big issues to fix first
Rivalry: 7-1, NC State
Current Streak: 1, NC State
First Meeting: The first meeting between the two schools took place in 1972. NC State won 43-20. Not too much info out there about it but, knowing what we know about 70's Syracuse football, sounds about right.
Last Meeting: Down 14-9 in the third quarter last season, NC State fumbled the kickoff, but instead of falling on it, Syracuse tried to advance the ball -- and failed to. Two Syracuse turnovers (including a brutal pick-six) later, the Orange left the Dome defeated, falling to NC State 24-17. Syracuse is now 3-6 (1-4) on the season, and needs to win three straight games to close the season if they hope to even be considered for a bowl.
Head Coaches: SU: Scott Shafer (3rd Year, 13-22), NC State: Dave Doeren (3rd Year, 17-18)
Curious Connections: Scott Shafer and NC State offensive coordinator Matt Canada were both grad assistants at Indiana in 1992 and coached together at Northern Illinois from 1998-2003. Also, there's this guy named George McDonald who is the wide receivers coach for the Wolfpack. You may remember him.
Last Year: NC State finished the season 8–5, 3–5 in ACC play to finish in fifth place in the Atlantic Division. They were invited to the St. Petersburg Bowl where they defeated UCF.
Last Game: The Pack took their best shot at Florida State but when the Noles swapped in Sean Maguire, that was that and they rolled to a 34-17 win.
"Fear Me, I've Killed Hundreds of Timelords": The Jacoby Brissett - Matthew Dayes Connection has come together for 865 yards and 12 touchdowns. Brissett has 2007 yards and 15 touchdowns to only two interceptions overall. He's also hit four other wide receivers for at least three scores each. So that's not fun for the SU secondary.
If Syracuse Wins: The Orange will have justified the effort against Clemson and may have perhaps officially saved Scott Shafer's job.
If Syracuse Loses: It'll be the post-LSU hangover all over again and make the BC game a potential "coaching for his job" situation for Shafer.
Fun Fact: NC State has outscored Syracuse 240-150 over the course of the eight-game series.
