As we get rolling into NCAA tournament in 2015, the ACC is going try and re-establish itself as the premier college basketball conference in the land. This year the ACC has 5 top 25 teams – Virginia, Duke, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Louisville. NC State is the conference’s 6th entry into the Big Dance. All of the teams including NC State are capable reaching the tournaments 2nd weekend.
In recent years that’s where the conference has faltered. The ACC hasn’t had a final 4 participant in 5 years. We have to go back to the Duke’s 2010 National Championship to find the ACC’s last Final 4 team. That is the conference’s longest Final 4 drought since the years of 1958-1962. If the ACC misses this year’s Final 4 it will be the conference’s longest stretch of missing the Final 4.
For a conference that prides itself on it’s basketball, it’s hard argue that you are the country’s top basketball conference when your teams have started a disturbing trend of flaming out in the NCAAs before the Final 4.
With that said, the ACC had some scares on the opening day of the NCAAs, but Notre Dame, UNC, and NC State all advanced giving the conference a strong 3-0 start. Duke, Virginia, and Louisville open their tournaments on Friday.
