Notre Dame gets back in the win column

Tonight the Fighting Irish Men’s Basketball team hosted the Marist Red Foxes at Purcell Pavilion. The Fighting Irish (4/7) and Red Foxes (7-2) had only met twice before tonight’s meeting, with the last meeting back on December 22nd, 2004 (which Notre Dame won by a score of 88-73). Marist came to Notre Dame on a five-game win streak which included wins over Bucknell, Iona, Manhattan, Dartmouth, and Maryland Easter Shore. How did the Irish fare against the Red Foxes tonight? Lets have a look!
First Half
Marist had the first possession and got on the board first with a layup by Jaden Daughtry. On Notre Dame’s first possession they answered with a jumper by Kebba Njie. Marist quickly answered with a jumper by Jadin Collins. Javon Cooley was then fouled and made both of his shots at the line. And then Max Allen II made a three point jumper to push Marist up by three. 7-4 Marist, 17:42.
Max Allen II was fouled by Kebba Njie and made one of his two foul shots. Then Notre Dame lost control of their next possession, and John Pascarelli’s jumper put Marist up 10-4. Markus Burton then sank a two-point jumper, followed by Marist’s Trace Salton sinking a layup, followed by another Markus Burton jumper. The score was 12-8 Marist at the 14:10 media break.
Coming out of the break Marist missed a three-point shot, and then on Notre Dame’s next possession they got called for a travel and turned the ball over. Notre Dame finally got a three to sink on an open shot by Markus Burton. (His 10th three of the year.) 12-11 Marist, 11:57.
Carey Booth was then fouled by Jaden Daughtry. Booth made one of his two shots to tie up the game at 12. (Marist hadn’t scored in over four minutes.) And then Marist scored two buckets in a row to go up 16-12 (one by Jaden Daughtry and one by Jadin Collins). Notre Dame answered with a three point jumper by Carey Booth. 16-15 Marist, 7:51.
Notre Dame snagged the rebound on Marist’s next possession, and Matt Zona sank his first three-point shot for Notre Dame’s first lead of the half. Markus Burton stole the ball on the next Marist possession and then sank a jumper to put Notre Dame up by four.
Matt Zona fouled Trace Salton who missed his free throw shot. After exchanging possessions a few time Max Allen II sank a jumper. Markus Burton answered with a layup, to put ND back up by four. 22-18 Notre Dame, 4;50.
Jackson Price made a layup for Marist to trim the Notre Dame lead to two. Markus Burton’s three-point shot was blocked, and on the next Marist possession Burton fouled Isaiah Brickner who made one of two shots at the line. 22-21 Notre Dame, 3:24. Notre Dame missed a three-point jumper by Tae Davis. On the next Marist possession Tae Davis fouled Jaden Daughtry who went to the line and made both free throw shots to put Marist back on top, 23-22.
Braeden Shrewsberry missed a three-point shot, and then Max Allen II made a layup for Marist, which was quickly answered by Notre Dame with a layup by Tae Davis. 25-24 Marist, at the half.
Second Half
Notre Dame got the half started with a jumper by Markus Burton. On Marist’s first possession of the half Notre Dame got the rebound and J.R. Konieczny sank a three-point shot to put ND back up by four. Javon Cooley answered with a three-point shot of his own and Marist cuts the lead to one. 29-28 Notre Dame, 17:08.
Markus Burton was fouled by Javon Cooley and went to the line where he made both free throw shots. Notre Dame now up by three. Then Notre Dame got the defensive rebound on Marist’s next possession and at the other end Markus Burton sank a three-point shot. 34-28 Notre Dame, 15:24.
The two teams exchanged a few fouls and free throws and the Notre Dame lead increased to seven, 36-29 Notre Dame. Max Allen II then made a layup, followed by Carey Booth making a jumper. Max Allen II made another layup but Notre Dame quickly answered with a three-point shot by Carey Booth. 41-33 Notre Dame, 12:41.
Javon Cooley is ejected on a flagrant two foul, and J.R. Konieczny headed to the line and made both of his foul shots. Notre Dame up by 10, 43-33. Max Allen II answered with a two-point layup. Marist then stole the ball from Notre Dame but couldn’t score on the possession. Tae Davis drew the foul and headed to the line where he made both of his foul shots. 45-35 Notre Dame, 10:32.
At the other end of the court Noah Harris made a three-point jumper. Kebba Njie missed a dunk but Marist couldn’t convert the turnover into points. Jadin Collins then sank a layup, and Notre Dame took a timeout to regroup. 45-40 Notre Dame, 9:20.
Jadin Collins got the bucket and the foul at 8:20 and headed to the foul line where he missed his first shot. Marist got the rebound but missed the three-point shot. Tae Davis drew a foul from Noah Harris and went to the line where he made both foul shots. After a few back and forth possessions Tae Davis made a layup after a six minute drought. 49-42 Notre Dame, 6:40.
Braeden Shrewsberry then made a Jumper and the Irish were up by 10 points. Marist missed a jumper and Tae Davis capitalized with a dunk. Marist answered with two Jadin Collins layups in a row. Markus Burton made a jumper for Notre Dame (playing with 4 fouls and 20 points). 55-46 Notre Dame.
Noah Harris made a three-point shot, followed by a Jadin Collins steal and Josh Pascarelli layup, and we have a four point game. 55-51 Notre Dame, 2;46
Markus Burton went to the line with a one and one opportunity and made the first shot but missed the second. Notre Dame got the rebound but couldn’t turn the possession into points. Marist turned the ball over on their next possession and Notre Dame went down court and lost possession of the ball.
Noah Harris put up a three-point shot that went in and trimmed the lead to two. Notre Dame turned the ball over on the next possession and this game was suddenly way too close.
With one minute left in the game Marist turned the ball over but Notre Dame missed their layup. Marist turned the ball over on the next possession, Noah Harris quickly fouled Tae Davis, who went to the line and made both of his free throw shots. 58-54 Notre Dame, 26.0.
Noah Harris put up a three-point shot and missed and Notre Dame got the ball. Daughtry fouled Shrewsberry who went to the line and made both of his free throw shots. Notre Dame now up by six points.
With 11.5 seconds left in the game Marist put up a three-point shot and missed, but Tae Davis fouled Daughtry who went to the line who made both of his free throw shots.
Final score, Notre Dame 60 - Marist 56.
Notre Dame’s next game is on Saturday, December 30th, at 12:00 EST, at home versus the Virginia Cavaliers.
