The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team took care of business on Wednesday night, taking down the Cornell Big Red 72-53 inside the Carrier Dome. In the annual Boeheim vs. Boeheim and Boeheim classic, Jimmy Boeheim finished as the high point man with 25 for Cornell while Buddy Boeheim had 16 points on four made 3s.
Junior forward Elijah Hughes led Syracuse in scoring with 22 points while Joe Girard had 9 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in his second start. The Orange moved to 3-1 on the season and will host Bucknell on Saturday.
Here are our takeaways from the game.
#NotAgainSU
In what’s been a tumultuous past two weeks for Syracuse University, the basketball team stood in solidarity with the #NotAgainSU movement by wearing t-shirts in pre-game warmups. The t-shirts were in support of a campus movement against prejudice, racism, anti-semitism following numerous acts across Syracuse University in the past two weeks.
Syracuse redshirt freshman John Bol Ajak also supported the movement with the hashtag as well as the words “PEACE” and “EQUALITY” across his sneakers.
Jalen Carey Injury
Jalen Carey was unavailable Wednesday night and won’t be for some time. After a prolonged right thumb injury, the sophomore guard will undergo surgery and be out eight to 10 weeks. He can apply for a medical redshirt to maintain three years eligibility.
Speculate as you wish.
Boeheim Bros Ball
As for the game itself, the Boeheim boys balled out. Jimmy Boeheim led all scorers with 25 and kept his team in it for most of the contest. He added 2 rebounds and 2 assists as well.
Buddy Boeheim finished with 16 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds and 1 steal.
Same time, same place (not literally) again next year for the annual Boeheim Bowl.
