The Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s basketball team blew out another overmatched opponent at home this evening, winning 79 to 50 over the now 0-3 Howard Bison.
John Mooney led the way with 18 points and a ridiculous 16 rebounds, nearly out-rebounding the Bison by himself through the first 30 minutes of the game (21 rebounds for Howard vs. 16 for Mooney) as the Irish dominated the boards, out-rebounding Howard 45 to 32 overall. Mooney also led the team in assists with 5.
Other key contributors for the Irish included Juwan Durham (11 points, 5 rebounds), Rex Pflueger (10 points, 5 rebounds), Dane Goodwin (11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists), and Prentiss Hubb (9 points, 4 assists).
The Irish shot 51% overall, but were very poor from the outside, making just 6 of 23 shots from deep (26%). They also were not exceptional from the charity stripe in limited appearances there, knocking down 9 of 13 free throws.
For Howard, the key performers were Wayne Bristol (14 points, 3 rebounds), Andre Toure (9 points, 5 rebounds), and Charles Williams (7 points). The Bison shot 31% from the field, 31% from deep, and 57% from the line.
The Irish improve to 2-1 on the season and will play again on Friday against the Marshall Thundering Herd at 7 PM ET.
