As Saturday night approaches, tensions rise in anticipation of who will become this year’s 2016 ACC champion. Both teams come evenly matched and evenly prepared to play their hearts out to the end of the 4th in hopes of gaining the title.
Overall, Justin Fuente’s no. 19 Hokies (9-3), ranked 5th rush offense in the ACC, hold a slight advantage when it comes to the rush game averaging 191.8 rushing yards per game in comparison to no. 3 Clemson’s (11-1) 172.3 yards per game.
Virginia Tech proved that they were going to be an offensive force to be reckoned with when they kicked off the season in a game against Liberty and finished with 206 rushing yards. Interestingly enough, those 206 yards were so spread out among running backs that no single player had more than 46 yards to speak for by the end of the game.
Although Virginia Tech only passes the ball about 47 percent of the time, Hokies’ quarterback, Jerod Evans, offers the team consistent yardage. Evans, ranked no. 7 in the ACC for total passing yards, wrapped up his regular season with 3,045 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Fuente’s diverse approach of rotating rushers paired with Evans’ undeniable talent will surely put Clemson’s defense to the test trying hold their opponent to minimal yardage.
Despite Virginia Tech’s impressive offense, Clemson comes equipped with the ACC’s no. 1 pass defense and no. 5 run defense both of which will be much-needed advantages during this championship brawl.
The two teams assemble Saturday night at 8:00pm at the Camping World Stadium in Florida ready to battle it out.
While it can’t be said who will come out with the win, you can likely predict big plays, high scores, and one heck of an exciting game.
