The ACC won all five non-conference matchups on Friday night. All were double-digit wins except for UNC, who got a tough game from Holy Cross but managed to win 62-54. The Heels were tied at half, but Marcus Paige led the Heels in the second half. Paige finished with 23 points on the night. The performance tells me that this team is still searching for an identity. Of course it doesn't help that UNC is still waiting on a ruling on PJ Hairston and Leslie McDonald.
Georgia Tech faced the toughest opponent of the night and the Yellow Jackets were quiet impressive defeating in-state rival Georgia 80-71. Georgia Tech made a run early in the second half and led by double-figures for most of the second half. Trae Golden led the Yellow Jackets with 19 points, while Daniel Miller (14 pts, 13 rebs) and Kammeon Holsey (10 pts, 12 rebs) each added a double-double.
In Durham, Duke handled FAU easily as Andre Dawkins rediscovered a familiar role. Dawkins scored 17 points and made 5 three pointers and looked more like himself than he has since he returned to the team. Dawkins had played just 2 minutes in the opener for his only action this season, so his performance on Friday night is a good sign for Duke. Rodney Hood scored a career high 28 points and some guy named Parker added 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Wake Forest picked up another relatively easy win over Presbyterian, a common occurence so far this season for the Deacs. Virginia Tech defeated Western Carolina as well, thanks to two solid freshman performances from Trevor Thompson and Ben Emelogu.
Today, Virginia travels to Davidson for a stiff test for a Cavalier team coming off a heart-breaking loss to VCU. Also, Syracuse hosts a toothpaste manufacturer and NC State takes on Campbell. Check out the game previews for each of those game below.
