Duke took down Michigan State 81-71 in their first test of the season. The 3 freshmen proved to be unphased by the Spartans, but it was Quinn Cook who led the way. Cook finished with 19 points, 6 assists, and zero turnovers. Mike Krzyzewski felt that the freshmen wore down a bit being involved in a big game for the first time, but Cook's play was the difference.
It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows for Duke though, rebounding is a concern and allowing Michigan State over 1.1 points per possession isn't exactly stellar defense. Let's see how this team can adjust. Up next for the Blue Devils is back-to-back games with Temple on Friday and either Stanford or UNLV on Saturday.
Elsewhere in the ACC, FSU picked up their first loss of the season to a hot shooting Northeastern team. Northeastern made 9-15 3 point shots and made 78% of their free throw attempts to knock of FSU. Aaron Thomas led the Seminoles 24 points, but FSU will walk away with questions about their defense.
Georgia Tech and Virginia picked up easy wins over Alabama A&M and South Carolina State, respectively.
Tonight, Wake Forest will get another test on the road taking on Arkansas, while Notre Dame hosts Coppin State, and Virginia Tech hosts Liberty. Arkansas, ranked #48 by Pomeroy, should give the Deacs a good test.
