Saturday was a seemingly a rare good day of basketball for ACC teams. Virginia Tech was the only team to lose on Saturday and that was at BYU, normally a pretty tough place to play. Of course, the Hokies barely showed up which won't help their cause when it comes time for postseason play. UNC picked up their best win of the season beating a talented UNLV squad 79-73. The Heels did so without Reggie Bullock who was sidelined with a mild concussion. Duke had a bit of a scare from Santa Clara for 25 minutes before opening things up as well.
The annual narrative on Duke getting calls from the refs to help them win a game started once again during the Duke/Santa Clara game. Former UNC point guard Kendall Marshall even tweeted the following during the game.
Refs takin control of this game per usual. smh
— Kendall Marshall (@KButter5) December 29, 2012
In the bonus with 14min to play. lol c'mon son #unreal
— Kendall Marshall (@KButter5) December 29, 2012
This prompted hundreds of people to retweet Marshall's original tweet and fan the fire of some sort of calculated referee bias to help Duke beat Santa Clara. Let me ask you this, is it just those 3 refs that are helping Duke out? Of course not, Marshall indicates that this has happened before. Clearly a larger subset of the referees are looking out for Duke in these games. What's in it for them? Does this directive come from the NCAA? Can you imagine the fallout if that came out? Do you think the NCAA would risk such a thing? Does it come from a television network? Which one, because Duke seems to have these foul advantages on several? Perhaps a higher being, the Lord in Heaven, has some favor on the Blue Devils? How high does this scheme go?
I'll leave it at that, but this idea is kind of jumping the shark in college basketball. To think that the referees have some sort of bigger agenda is ridiculous.
Today, only Virginia is in action hosting Wofford. Game Sim likes the Cavaliers by 19. Wofford is ranked #115 by Pomeroy, meaning they aren't exactly a pushover.
