Saturday's ACC action was highly entertaining as it had 4 quality games of the 5 on the schedule.
Wake Forest had Miami all tied up at 48 with 8 minutes remaining, but the Canes created separation at the point and never looked back. The Demon Deacons were simply too calous with the ball, turning it over on 24% of possessions while Miami's veteran presence made the difference. Ja'Quan Newton was great off the bench for the Canes, leading the way with 18 points.
Duke trailed NC State at halftime, but the Blue Devils turned things around quickly in the second half. The combination of Brandon Ingram and Grayson Allen were too much for the Pack to handle. Ingram finished with 25 points and 7 rebounds while Grayson Allen put together a complete game with 28 points, 7 assists, and 7 boards. On the sideline, Amile Jefferson was seen walking without a boot at a game for the first time. I did some quick research comparing Jefferson's return to that of Ryan Kelly. Ryan Kelly first appeared on the sideline for Duke without a walking boot around February 12th and made his return to the floor March 2nd, 2013 against Miami. Assuming the injuries are comparable and they heal at the same rate, that would have Jefferson returning in 2-3 weeks. One game that fits that timeline is February 13th when Duke hosts Virginia.
Louisville picked up a nice road win at Georgia Tech in a game the Cardinals trailed most of the way. Georgia Tech made some mistakes late, while Louisville proved to be more efficient. The Cardinals are now 5-1 in conference play and 16-3 overall. The rankings at NCAAGameSim.com have loved the Cardinals all season long.
Pitt picked up a solid road win as well at Florida State, defeating the Seminoles 74-72. It was the offensive rebounding (grabbing 41% of their own misses) and three point shooting (10-23 from 3) that was the key for Pitt.
Notre Dame steamrolled past BC 76-49, but it wasn't all sunshine and lollipops for the Irish. Demetrius Jackson injured a hamstring early in the game and didn't return. Mike Brey said after the game that he didn't think the injury was serious but the Irish can't afford to be without their scoring leader.
Today, we have 2 games on the schedule. UNC plays at Virginia Tech at 3 PM and that game will now be aired on ESPN3 only. The game was moved up for travel reasons due to the winter storm. It will be re-aired at 6:30 PM on ESPNU at its originally scheduled timeslot. The Hokies are 4-2 in conference play while the Heels are a perfect 6-0. The other game on the schedule has Virginia hosting Syracuse at 7 PM.
