You know, Andrew Wiggins isn’t the only high school kid struggling to figure out where he’ll play college ball.
Sidy Djitte, a 6-10 center out of Fayettevills, North Carolina, was expected to make his decision this Monday, but then had a sudden change of heart.
His high school coach had this to say to Scout.com:
“We talked [Sunday] night at the dinner table. [Djitte] had made up his mind. We thought he was going to announce it [Monday] and he was going to call that specific coach this morning, so that’s how word got out,” Lattimer said.
Djitte had a change of heart sometime between dinner on Sunday night and his arrival to school on Monday morning. There would be no commitment to Clemson, Cincinnati or Memphis.
The reality is, for a player like Wiggins, he could go play for Maryland Eastern Shore and still be one of the top picks in the 2014 draft. For a player like Djitte, the decision is a life-changing.
Currently a 3-star recruit (the 43rd best center according to ESPN), Djitte is long and he’s physical on both ends of the floor. He prefers to play like a face-up four and is capable of hitting from 15-feet. At best, he’s a marginal NBA prospect. He’s a four-year commitment, who will need time to develop his foot work, spacing and back to the basket moves. Picking the right school is everything.
As of now, he’s deciding between Clemson, Memphis and Cincinnati.
For Clemson, the one benefit they have over the other schools is exposure. Both Memphis and Cincinnati will be moving to the newly created American Athletic Conference. While there are some good teams (Connecticut, Temple and Louisville for one season), the ACC is set to become the premiere basketball conference (especially after Louisville joins in 2014).
On top of that, there will be an opportunity to play right away. Clemson’s front court is empty. The only players Djitte will be competing with for minutes are 6-8 Landry Nnoko (who played six minutes per game last year) and community college transfer, Ibrahim Djambo.
