Tough break for the senior.
Louisville senior running back Jeremy Smith will miss the rest of the season because of a fractured toe. Cardinal head coach Bobby Petrino announced the news during his Monday press conference.
Smith, who carried five times for eight yards in the season-opener against Purdue, suffered the injury during practice last Thursday.
Smith had been a contributor for Louisville during each of his first two seasons with the Cardinals. He carried 57 times for 382 yards and eight touchdowns in 2015, and 60 times for 270 yards and three scores a season ago.
Petrino said that Louisville will approach its running back situation going forward the same way they did on Saturday against North Carolina. In that game, Reggie Bonnafon and Malik Williams split time, with Williams carrying 13 times for 149 yards. Petrino added that true freshman Colin Wilson needs to get himself ready to play.
Having only played one game this year, Smith would be a candidate for a medical redshirt that would allow him one more season of college eligibility.
