Numbers wise this is a fairly even match-up. UNC comes out ahead in both efficiency categories but Maryland has largely been a better shooting team from inside and outside the arc. Maryland eFG% of 60% is seventh nationally and the 2P% of 62.8 is third. As a team Maryland is a decent three point shooting team but on the individual level Duke graduate transfer Rasheed Sulaimon is hitting 12-24. Sophomore forward Jared Nickens has hit 13-31 from three. Jake Layman, who has faced UNC before prior to the Terps move to the B1G is 8-25 but is a career 35% shooter from three and hit 38% from beyond the arc a year ago.
Because Maryland's move to the B1G is just two years old and Maryland picked up a couple of transfers from ACC schools, there are players with experience against UNC in Chapel Hill. While he was with Duke Sulaimon was 0-5 from three and 2-11 overall scoring 7 points in two career games in Chapel Hill. Likewise Layman has played in Chapel Hill twice. As a freshman he played just 16 minutes and missed both shots he took. The next season(2014), Layman scored seven points and was 1-4 from three. Georgia Tech transfer Robert Carter had a nine point outing versus UNC in a 79-63 loss in Chapel Hill in 2013. He also scored 9 points against UNC in the return game that season in Atlanta. He did not face UNC in 2014 due to injury.
Overall UNC's rebounding numbers are better on both ends of the floor and despite Mark Turgeon being a former Roy Williams assistant, he does not prescribe to the same tempo. Maryland is 314th in tempo at 67 possessions per game, five possessions less than the Tar Heels.
One other note, Maryland can be turnover prone with a TO% of 19.1 and doesn't get to the free throw line that often with an FTR of just 40%. On the flip side, the Terps don't foul. Opposing teams have an FTR of 24.4% which is 15th nationally.
