Three of the KenPom top eight and five of the top 15 are in the East with UNC on a path to potentially need wins over two KenPom top ten teams in Philladelphia to advance to the Final Four. Assuming UNC gets out of Raleigh, a possible match-up with #8 KenPom team could await in the Sweet Sixteen. If UNC advances #6 in KenPom West Virginia could be waiting. On the flip side, if the bracket breaks the right way UNC could see KenPom #15 and #14 in Philly.
In terms of the numbers, UNC owns the 2nd best offensive and defensive efficiency in the region. Kentucky bests UNC with an offensive efficiency of 122.3, #1 in the nation but is ranked 70th in defensive efficiency. The best defensive numbers in the region belong to West Virginia which uses a stifling press to sport the nation's second best defensive turnover rate of 25.5. The #1 team in defensive turnover rate? The region's #14 seed Stephen F. Austin, WVU's opponent in the first round. SFA is also ranked 33rd just ahead of Notre Dame and right behind Wisconsin.
Oh and in terms of who to pull for in the play-in game to be UNC's opponent, Fairleigh Dickinson is 333rd in defensive efficiency, 345th in defensive rebounding rate. plays the same tempo as UNC and has just two players over 6-6. Tar Heels might score 110 points if that match-up happens.
