After being conspicuously missing from the College Football Playoff Top 25, North Carolina makes its first ever appearance in the poll at #23. You can view the entire poll here.
At this point it is clear UNC has to major obstacles to its ability to quickly ascend this poll. The first is the inexplicable loss to South Carolina to open the season. The second is the two FCS teams on UNC's schedule. These two factors are apparently enough to keep UNC below six teams with two losses.
As we noted last week, this isn't a huge deal right now. UNC's immediate goal is to win the Coastal Division, finish 11-1 and get a shot at #1 Clemson in the ACC Championship. Even then, the Tar Heels' ultimate ceiling is probably one of the New Year Six bowl games.
