The Owings Mills, Maryland product signed a letter of intent in the spring of 2014. Cohen was a true freshman for the Tar Heels during the 2014 season, playing in all 13 games.
He started as a right guard in two of the games.
During the summer of 2015, Cohen asked for his release from his scholarship to the University of North Carolina. UNC granted him his release and he left the football program
In 2016, Cohen signed with the University of Virginia; however, he never enrolled with the Cavaliers.
The Tar Heels will appreciate Cohen’s services on the offensive line during the 2017 season.
UNC had two senior linemen on their roster last season, Caleb Peterson and Jon Heck.
The rest of the linemen on UNC’s roster consisted of nine freshmen and five juniors.
Peterson missed most of the 2016 season due to season-ending back injury. Prior to this injury, Peterson started 30 consecutive games.
The addition of Cohen will bring a veteran player back in the fold for the Tar Heels’ offensive line. This will be crucial for the starting quarterback, who will be a fresh face for UNC due to the departure of Mitch Trubisky to the NFL.
According to Inside Carolina, Cohen will be joining the Tar Heels’ roster as a walk-on. He will have to battle other linemen for a starting position, let alone a scholarship.
Though, this may be a blessing in disguise.
As a walk-on, the odds may seem like they are stacked against Cohen. However, remember that Mack Hollins was a former UNC walk-on as well.
Now, Hollins is a rookie wide receiver on the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles.
The sky is the limit for Cohen. Welcome back and finish strong!
