The Tar Heels lose their deep threat after Hollins suffers broken collarbone vs. Miami
Senior wide receiver Mack Hollins is out for the rest of the season with a broken collarbone he suffered in the game against Miami. Unfortunately, the injury puts an end to Hollins’ extremely impressive career with the Tar Heels as one of the better deep threats in college football.
Hollins will finish his Tar Heel career third in touchdowns with 20 and first in yards per catch at 20.6. The former walk-on was a huge presence on special teams as well, serving as a captain for the team.
It’s an incredibly tough ending for Hollins’ career and will have a huge impact on Carolina’s ability to stretch the field. Receivers Austin Proehl and Bug Howard will need to pick up the slack on deep balls from Mitch Trubisky for the remainder of the season. UNC went 14-2 in games when Mack Hollins scored a touchdown. That, if nothing else, shows the tremendous presence that will need to be replaced.
Hopefully Hollins gets an opportunity to play football at the next level after he recovers from this injury. He is a dynamic player that could be special for a team playing on Sundays. It’s incredibly disappointing that he couldn’t finish out his career at UNC with a full, healthy season, but everything Hollins has accomplished to this point will stand for quite some time. To go from a walk-on to one of the best down field receivers in the country with mind-blowing YPC numbers is incredibly impressive and should be appreciated.
