We interrupt College Football Realignment to discuss actual football.

This week the Pre-season College Football Coaches Poll Top 25 was released.

What did the poll get right and did it get wrong?

Right

  1. Georiga is ranked #1 – I have no love for the Bulldogs, but you have to respect what they’ve done with their back-to-back titles. Until they are unseated, they are #1.
  2. Five Pac 12 in the top 20 – It’s a shame the Pac 12 is breaking up, because their football is as good and deep as it’s been in years. USC, Washington, Utah, Oregon, and Oregon State are all really good teams. That’s more top 20 teams than the SEC and Big 10. If the SEC wasn’t so top-heavy, I might even call the Pac-12 the country’s best football conference going into the season.
  3. Florida State and Clemson are in the top 10. Things are set up for the ACC to have a playoff team, and that starts with having teams highly ranked in the preseason. FSU and Clemson have been correctly placed in the top 10, and at 8 and 9 that’s about right.

Wrong

  1. Texas A&M in the top 25 – This was a brand name recruiting ranking add plain and simple. The Aggies are coming off a 5-7 (3-6) year and maybe they will be a top-25 team, but they don’t belong there now.
  2. Okahoma at #19? Yea see above
  3.  TCU at #16. If an SEC school had lost in the national title game by any score, they would have been no worse than the top 5 in the next poll. TCU that low is a real sign of disrespect for TCU and the Big 12. They should have been ranked somewhere in the top 10.
