Like death and taxes, the one thing you can always count on come Selection Sunday is people debating #1 seeds – who should have been one, how in the hell did that team get a #1 seed over this team, etc.
Joe Lundardi of ESPN.com after Miami’s loss to Duke on Sat. had Indiana, Gonzaga, Kansas, and Georgetown as the #1 seeds. Hearing that, after Duke had just beaten Miami (who Joe had before the game as a #1 seed) made us scratch our heads. What has Kansas or Georgetown (for that matter Gonzaga) done to deserve a #1 seed over Duke? Their resume did not look better than Duke’s, especially with Ryan Kelly in the lineup.
That made us think. If they do blind resumes for who’s in and who’s out, then why not do them for #1 seeds as well? It only seems fair to treat them the same way.
So we present to you 8 teams and their resumes (using KenPom.com‘s stats as we feel they are the best to compare each team). We’ve ranked them in the order from best to worst in our opinion. Can you guess which team is which?
Before we reveal the teams here’s why we ordered them the way we did.
- We felt that your SOS and NCSOS should be heavily considered. It’s easy to put up a great record when you’re playing several games against some of the worst teams in college basketball. If you are scheduling numerous games against those teams, just how good are you? And why are you not scheduling tougher. If you go out and put up an impressive record against a tougher schedule, it shows you are one of the top teams in the country.
- Which is why we showed the record against both the Top 25 and Top 50 rated teams according to KenPom.com.
- We also wanted to see what the best win was for each team so see exactly who they had beaten as well as their worst loss. A #1 seed should not be losing to a team that would not make the NCAA Tournament.
And now for the big reveal. Did you guess the teams correctly?
According to our comparison, as of today (3/4/13), your #1 seeds should be Duke, Louisville, Indiana and yes…even Gonzaga. Do you agree/disagree? Is there another team we should have considered for a #1 seed? Let us know in the comments below.
