Jim Boeheim and Greensboro may be ending the feud

The Syracuse coach hasn’t been defeated, but he seems ready to move on — the city may be ready too.

Syracuse Orange men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim has been “feuding” with the South and specifically, Greensboro, since 2011. He’s never lost (he even beat UNC-Greensboro on the basketball court) to the city necessarily, but in any case, it seems that the rivalry is about to come full circle.

Greenbsoro.com reports that Boeheim will speak at the 2019 Fred Barakat Banquet at Greensboro Coliseum in Spring 2019, a voluntary trip for the Orange coach to a city that’s actively (and with an unquenchable thirst) tried to make it a “thing” between the two parties for the better part of the last decade. Granted, Boeheim himself has helped stoke some of the flames, but that’s also who he is. His remarks about the city’s lack of traffic did not go unnoticed by locals last month.

Still, this is probably the end of a rivalry we’ve gotten a lot of #jokesandgarbage mileage out of. It had a good run. I’m sure Boeheim will say something inflammatory about the South again soon.

That, plus the rest of your Syracuse-related links below:

“Actually, I’d rather go to Greensboro,” Boeheim added, “because it’s easier to get to the game and back than in all the other bigger cities because you have to fight all the traffic. The game is the game: You play on the court, and that doesn’t change. I like the ACC, I like Greensboro, and I like restaurants in the south. Most of my recommendations on restaurants are in the south now, and I have a lot of them.”

“I just want to say publicly that I really do appreciate Dave doing that,” Babers said on the Atlantic Coast Conference coaches’ teleconference on Wednesday. “That was something that was very gracious on his end. ”All of us know how important our time is as a head coach, especially to our own programs. For him to go out and visit one of my guys in the local hospital is something I’ll never forget, something that I’ll always appreciate.”

For Syracuse, the interest makes sense as well. They are losing both of their starting offensive tackles off of this year’s team in Cody Conway and Koda Martin. The two seniors have been very good for the Orange in 2018, but Syracuse needs to replace them next season and beyond. While they have recruited players at tackle, you cannot pass on someone with as much upside as Hudson has.

Syracuse football names captains: QB Eric Dungey, DT Chris Slayton, P Sterling Hofrichter (Syracuse.com)

“Eric, Chris and Sterling have carried themselves the right way both on and off the football field,” SU head coach Dino Babers said in a statement. “Their consistency and their commitment to bringing the younger players along have put us in a position to achieve some things that haven’t been done here in a long time.”

Elmore is cutting weight to maximize how effective he can be from multiple positions. At one point this season, he reached 299 pounds, before the coaches said he was too big. Now, he is working to enter next season at 275, a mix between slimming down and maintaining his effectiveness. He wants to be faster in the open field to play more linebacker. And to silence the fat jokes, he joked.
